TITANIC /

Dorothy Gibson was Hollywood's brightest silent film star, and one of the Titanic's luckiest survivors. Travelling home from Europe in April 1912 with Sammy, a scrappy seagull she'd rescued, the ship struck the iceberg and she manages to survive.

Within a month of returning to New York, she was back on set, starring in the world's first Titanic film, playing herself. Her memories overwhelmed her and she collapsed in tears. Sammy's indignant squawk from the rafters that made her laugh, stand back up, and finish the scene.

The film was a sensation. Then a fire destroyed every copy in 1914. Dorothy never acted again.
